Red-Light Running - A Common Cause of Devastating Motorcycle Accidents

October 11, 2021 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Red-Light Running a Common cause of Devastating Motorcycle AccidentsThe Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that hundreds of deaths and tens of thousands of injuries are caused by red-light runners in the United States. Some of those tragically killed are motorcyclists who have very little protection. Red-light running also causes more significant motorcyclist injuries than other accidents because drivers typically move through intersections at a higher rate of speed when they are trying to beat a red light. Most red-light accidents are “T-bone” accidents. These are angular accidents causing severe injuries and even fatalities because there are no “crumple zones” on the sides of vehicles, as there may be in the front or back.

Florida law treats red-light running as aggressive driving, and about 56 percent of drivers admit to running red lights some of the time. Authorities find that some red-light runners “zone out” on long trips, are distracted by devices and/or passengers, or are operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The IIHS says, “In locations where a right turn on red is permitted, drivers who fail to come to a complete stop before turning may be considered red-light runners. Violations also include people turning right on red at intersections where doing so is prohibited.”

Motorcyclists have the right to expect others occupying the road to abide by Florida traffic control devices and regulations. When they do not, motorcyclists may suffer devastating and life-changing personal injuries.
